Sky TV to broadcast in 3D from 2010

Good news, that 42” plasma TV you brought last year is obsolete. Put it on eBay now while you still have the chance of making a bit of money from it.

Watch Phone For Budding Secret Agents
Posted by Lester Madden under Gadgets, Smartphones
Ever fancied yourself as a secret agent? Of course you have, but to be the next James Bond you need to have the latest gadgets. I’ve said a few times that this year we are going to see a plethora of watch phones come to the market. At MWC and CTIA there were a number of the mobile heavy weights showing off their latest integrated watch/cell designs.

Gadget Time: Sifftables
Posted by Lester Madden under Gadgets
Strange day today as it’s my last day as a Nokia employee. It’s been a bit of a strange year really, this will be my 3rd employer since Christmas and I haven’t moved desk once. Of course the moves have been due to Nokia acquiring Symbian, and now with the Symbian Foundation being launched tomorrow I’ll be taking up the position of Developer Marketing Manager making what I hope is my final move of the year.

Coming Soon To A Smartphone Near You
Posted by Lester Madden under Gadgets, Smartphones
We have been able to listen to music on smartphones for a while now. I’m guessing there are not that many models that don’t have the ability to play MP3s shipping anymore. Movies are taken for granted as well with almost every phone model being able to support video playback. Watching movies however on a small screen is not for everyone. I find those seatback video screens on airplanes small enough as it is. Except when the person in front puts their seat right back and it presses up against your face for the next 8 long miserable hours. ah the joys of travelling economy.

The Future Is Already Here
Posted by Lester Madden under Augmented Reality, Gadgets, Smartphones, Symbian
A guy called Charles H. Duell who was the commissioner of the US patents office back in 1899 once said, “everything that can be invented has been invented”. Well he got that one wrong. Funny though, last week I was raving over Microsoft’s augmented reality project only to find that there is a game available on Symbian OS for the Nokia N95.

Bluetooth+ Blackberry + Lewis Hamilton = Fun
Posted by Lester Madden under Gadgets, Smartphones, Symbian
It seems that Symbian OS isn’t the only platform to have a version of ShakerRacer.
The guys over at Vodafone have developed something similar for the Blackberry Storm. Even Lewis Hamilton gets to have a play.

A Real ShakerRacer
Posted by Lester Madden under General, Software, Symbian
A nice relaxing weekend is almost over. Almost because I have today (Monday) off as holiday, so I’m still relaxing. Yesterday I went to see Tina Turner in concert at the O2 in London. I’m not really a fan, but it was very entertaining.
Someone sent me an SMS to ask if I enjoyed the show. The only problem was they sent it to my house phone not my mobile. In the UK that means your phone rings every 30 minutes until you pick it up and listen to the full message. 12:30am the first call started, by the time we located the phone it hung up. 1:00am we got the next one, I finally answered the call at 1:30am only to be greeted with an electronic voice asking me if I enjoyed the show. I’m not sure who sent me the message but in the words of Mr T. I pity the fool.
While is seems like a long time off, especially if you are a delegate, but the Smartphone show is only 7 months away. That means that it’s time to start planning what’s going to be at the show. Last year we launched Mobile DevFest to bring back developers to the show and had an amazing event. This year we want to make it even bigger and better for developers, so if you have any killer ideas that you would like to see, feel free to let me know.
Last year the central attraction of the Mobile DevFest was ShakerRacer. Control a radio controlled car over BlueTooth from a Nokia N95 using the accelerometer API. As you see from the photo below we had a huge race circuit to race the car around.
I found a real version of ShakerRacer where a couple of university students put a BlueTooth module in to real car for their BSc. It’s the daddy of ShakerRacers, the only shame is they didn’t thrash the car in the video, but knowing how hard it was to control the mini version that was probably a wise move.

Chumbycide
Posted by Lester Madden under Gadgets, General
If you’re a geek in anyway you’ll probably want to get yourself some tissues before reading this.
In marketing you often get lots of cool goodies, I have boxes of stuff under my desk, behind my desk and piled up at the windows. But once in a while you get some really cool stuff. Consider if you will what is probably the worlds best gadget. Behold the Chumby.
