Contrary to popular belief I’m not dead
Posted by Lester Madden under Augmented Reality, Smartphones, Software, Symbian, Travel
I left Symbian at the end of August and have had a nice relaxing September at home. I haven’t been up too much, other than catching up on a few xBox titles I missed out on.

Sony Ericsson Satio

One of the guys here in the office managed to get hold of a Sony Ericsson Satio to play around with a few weeks ago.
He loves it and I must admit that it looks pretty hot.

Symbian UI Brainstorm
Posted by Lester Madden under Symbian
Got a burning idea for what UI you would like to see on Symbian devices in the future?
The best way to get your idea out there is to share it.
Symbian have setup the UI brainstorm website to collect and share your ideas. Visit the site to see the existing submissions, you can also email the UI guys to share your ideas. You never know, the next phone you buy could be running a UI you designed.

Samsung Innovation Quest

The i8910 HD device from Samsung is one sweet looking phone. We had one on our exhibition stand at Mobile World Congress earlier in the year. I thought HD playback on a phone would be a gimmick and couldn’t imaging why anyone would want HD on a device, but man it was so impressive, it was perfection. Now I can’t imagine why every phone doesn’t have HD.

What does Symbian mean for developers?
Posted by Lester Madden under Symbian
If you’re a developer then take a look at a couple of interesting videos that appeared this morning on YouTube.
They are both published by Symbian, the first sets up the developer proposition, the second is focused more on the benefits of the platform.
Interesting stuff.
What it’s all about for a developer

Phones To Consider When You Are Super Rich
Posted by Lester Madden under General, Smartphones, Symbian
I visited Motorola in Turin not so long ago. In their reception area they had a cabinet displaying some of their high range devices. One of them was solid gold Razor, the ultimate bling. As this weekend’s Euro Millions Lottery is a massive £120 million roll over jackpot, it got me thinking about what I would do with the money should I be fortunate enough to have the winning ticket on Saturday morning.

LG Xenon And General Catch-up
Posted by Lester Madden under Smartphones, Symbian
No blog for a few days. I setup a new blog dedicated to augmented reality and have been working on getting that ready. I installed a really complicated WordPress theme for the new site that looked great, but I spent ages trying to get it to work. I’ve given up on that theme now and going to go for something a little easier to work with. Hopefully the newsite should be ready over the weekend.

Augmented Reality And Smartphone Show 2009
Posted by Lester Madden under Augmented Reality, General, Smartphones, Symbian
Smartphone Show 2009 planning has started, finally. We are a little late this year what with the Symbian -> Nokia -> Symbian Foundation move, but things are starting to move. As I’m sure I said before I am responsible for the DevFest which is all things developer at the show and you probably guessed that I am keen to have an augmented reality for smartphones focus at the show this year to generate some excitement/awareness of this super cool technology.

3D Photo Browser For The Nokia 5800

Do you ever get one of those days were you want to scream and kick your PC to pieces? Yesterday my laptop was doing the strangest things. When I tried to send an email I could type anywhere except inside the message area. I could write in the subject field, the email address field or any other application, but when I clicked into the message area text refused to be accepted.

Augumented Reality Demo For Nokia Devices
Posted by Lester Madden under Augmented Reality, Smartphones, Software, Symbian
When I left school I wanted to write computer games. The problem was couldn’t draw so my skills in the computer gaming world were somewhat limited. So I ended up doing systems programming which didn’t require any game development skills, just good old ODBC to suck data out a database somewhere and display it in a form. I still shed the odd tear at what could have been but I am content with playing games and keeping up to date with future gaming technology.

The Future Is Already Here
Posted by Lester Madden under Augmented Reality, Gadgets, Smartphones, Symbian
A guy called Charles H. Duell who was the commissioner of the US patents office back in 1899 once said, “everything that can be invented has been invented”. Well he got that one wrong. Funny though, last week I was raving over Microsoft’s augmented reality project only to find that there is a game available on Symbian OS for the Nokia N95.
