Get Tough On Crime

Posted by Lester Madden under General

Rant about crime today.

I read in the news the other day about a thief who has been caught stealing from a specially rigged camera car for the THIRD time this year. Let me say that again, its June and already this guy has been caught breaking into and stealing from a police bait car 3 times. What’s unbelievable it he only got 14 weeks for his latest crime which is a complete joke. Where is the deterrent in that? He’ll be out in 4 weeks and will probably break into a car on his way home from prison.

Link to SkyNews article.

I know some people think he should be shot, strung up, have his hands cut off etc, but I guess if he was your son you’d feel different. But you do have to wonder, if he has been caught 3 times already what needs to be done to make crime a deterrent.

There use to be a time when prison was such a deterrent, these days they have Sky TV, pool tables etc. I’m not saying they live in luxury but I’m pretty sure they have it a lot better than the average pensioner or even most of the victims they steal from.

Now if you wake up to find an intruder in your home, you get arrested if you touch them. It wont belong before you’ll be arrested for not making a burglar a sandwich and a coffee while they rob you blind. Talk about going soft on crime.

I’ve been lucky, I have only been burgled the once, I don’t live in a place with high crime, though I did get a smack in the mouth one night walking home from work from 6 guys for no reason, but I still consider myself lucky.

I’m all for the US system of 3 strikes and you’re out. That would cure a lot of crime and would be a deterrent, if not after you get caught breaking into your 3rd car you’ll be spending the rest of your life behind bars. If you don’t learn your lesson after the second time they catch you then you have no place in society. Paedophile’s, murders, and rapists should only get one strike, they go to prison for life on their first offence. Definitely no place in society for them.

Anyway that’s my rant for the day.

If you think the government should get tough on crime I created a government petition. If it gets 100 signatures then it goes to the PM. It will probably get some bullshit answer about the government being committed to reducing crime and England being the safest it has been since 10BC but feel free to sign.

Sign the get tough on crime petition

One Unders

It’s been a while since I had time to blog. After changing jobs back in March it’s been non stop, and when I get home in the evening I don’t want to look at a computer let alone use one.

Fortunately we moved back to London so commuting to work is better and I have more time to spare, I’m just not sure where it’s all going. When I lived out in Andover it took on average 1.5 hours for my morning commute, that was part of the reason for moving back to London. That and the £35 daily train fare. The best thing about being back in London is the tube network. Anywhere you want to go for £2.50.  Makes going to work almost a pleasure.

Trouble is when it goes wrong it really goes wrong. I have been in a tube derailment at Mile End station and enjoyed a leisurely stroll though the tunnels after being evacuated off the tube. Not bad for 10 months.

This morning as I was walking to the tube station and saw hundreds of people walking away from it. Someone eventually stopped me and said that there was a ‘passenger action’ at Mile End. (Crowd pleasing London Underground speak for someone jumped, fell, or was pushed in front of a train). So I had to try and figure out the busses to get to work.

This is what TFL suggested:

What a monster journey, 3 – 5 buses and over 2 hours. I could reach Paris in less time that it would take me to get into London.

I never understand why someone would want to jump in front of a train. Forget the inconvenience factor, I’m not one of those people who complains about the thoughtless person delaying their journey. I remember seeing a program on TV that most people who jump don’t die instantly, so there are better, less painful ways to go.
