Poor mans Vista

When I was at Microsoft I used to love installing the latest software. Mainly because it was my job to know how to use the latest software, but also because it was free.

Now I’m in the real world I have to pay for my own software or at least wait for Skype to upgrade to Vista.

I looked at upgrading my home PC to Vista but couldn’t bring myself to part with the cash. I like my PC working, XP is stable, all my hardware works just fine. Moving to Vista I’d probably end up having to replace something or other.

The other thing that puts me off is having read Vista reviews I don’t see anything in Vista compelling enough for me to upgrade. I can find my pictures just fine as they are and while Aero looks good it’s not worth me shelling out my own money.

So I did the next best thing. I found a really cool XP -> Vista theme that gives my PC that Vista look and feel.

Complete with a nice Vista style Start bar.

As the theme is not support by MS (as you would imagine) you have to do a bit of jiggery to install it. Mainly replace Uxtheme.dll which is a protected file. Fortunately its actually very easy to replace, you just need a free utility which you can get from here along with some instructions on how to use it.

Once you have replaced Uxtheme.dll you can download the XP to Vista theme. There are loads of them out on the web, however the one I used can be found here. (the download is not obvious, look at the PC monitor icon on the left). Once you have downloaded the file copy the contents to: C:\Windows\Resources\Themes and change the themes as normal.

This particular theme changes everything in XP to look like Vista. Control Panel, Toolbars etc. There is also a Sidebar component but I haven’t played around with that yet.
